Design and Make Courses

Fold, Stitch and Stamp

Create artist books with hand carved rubber stamps. Ruth will show you how to make stitched and stab bound books as well as demonstrating some simple folding structures.  Alongside this you you will learn how to carve your own rubber stamps to print with.  The techniques will then be used together whilst considering sequence, narrative and construction to design and produce finished books.

Day 1

On day one we will learn basic sewn book structures and folds.  You will create at least two books and get an insight into paper engineering.

Day 2

On the second day we will start by learning how to carve rubber stamps.  These stamps can be used to bring the content of your book alive. We will look at the book as a whole - content, structure and material. You will create an Artist Book considering sequence, narrative and construction, adding further dimensions by mixing cuts and folds.  (You may wish to bring any of your own artwork or papers to work with)

Dates:  11 - 12 August 2018

Altered Books

Bring – an old book or two to customise, and any interesting collage materials you might have. (We will have a selection of materials, but if you have anything particular you would like to work with, please bring it along.)

Manipulate and re-structure old books.

Day 1

On day one we will be looking at basic collage, book folding, and cutting techniques, as well as de-bunking the taboo of altering or cutting up books. You have our permission to vandalise (improve, update, renew) old books using clever paper manipulation techniques.

Choosing and preparing materials, testing out a range of basic techniques such as cutting, folding, sewing, pasting, paper structure, and 3D structures such as pop-outs, to customise a worn out old book into an artwork you can be proud of.

Day 2

Using some of the techniques we looked at on the first day, you will be customising an existing book of your choice into a new and exciting piece of Book Art. Decide how you are going to manipulate your book for maximum effect using various paper manipulation techniques and / or collage.

Once you start, you won’t be able to stop!

Introduction to Collage

Bring – any interesting collage materials you might have. (We will have a selection of materials, but if you have anything particular you would like to work with, please bring it along.)

Work with beautiful vintage papers, images and ephemera, and experiment with clever collage and paper manipulation techniques to make new, surprising and exciting works of art.

Day 1

On day one we will be looking at basic collage techniques, with the initial selecting and preparation of materials, composition and lateral thinking, and cutting and sticking.

Have fun and let your imagination run riot, and you will create surprising and dynamic artworks to be proud of!

Day 2

We will continue with this on the second day, incorporating added dimensions such as basic pop-ups and other 3D elements to make your collages stand out from the crowd.

Dates:  6 - 7 October 2018

Course Tutor:  Emma Johnson

Level:  Beginners to Advanced

Cost:  £150

Advanced Cutting & 3D Collages

Work with beautiful vintage papers, images and ephemera, and experiment with clever collage, layering, cutting & building techniques to make dynamic 3 dimensional collages.

Bring – any interesting collage materials you might have. (We will have a selection of materials, but if you have anything particular you would like to work with, please bring it along.)

Day 1

On day one we will be looking at 3D collage techniques, with the initial selecting and preparation of materials, cutting, and different methods of building up layers, strengthening paper, composition and lateral thinking. We will be making some simple 3D images with structures such as pop-outs and foam spacers. Have fun and let your imagination run riot, and you will create surprising and dynamic artworks to be proud of.

Day 2

We will continue with this on the second day by building more complex layers into our collages. Preparing the materials in advance so that you have sizes and positioning worked out beforehand, using various methods of construction (theatre flats, pop-ups, doors, boxes, hinges etc) you will design and make a bold exciting collage/construction – a mini 3D universe in which your imagination reigns supreme!
