Papermaking Courses

Plant-based Papermaking

All those plants out there in your garden, along the hedgerows or the flowers in that vase on the kitchen table…..what kind of paper will they make?

Day 1

This workshop will introduce you to the skills needed to create sheets of paper embedded with these plant materials using the western style of papermaking. You will learn how to pigment the papermaking fibres and how to process the plant material.

Day 2

The second day will allow you to concentrate on you own ideas and experiments. Having become familiar with sheet formation you will be able to bring together ideas that could be used for the production of papers for etching, screen printing, letterpress, bookmaking and book arts.

Dates:  13 - 14 October 2018

Course Tutor:  Mandy Brannan

Level:  Beginners to Advanced

Cost:  £150

Fusion - Experimental Papermaking

Experiment with the traditional Japanese style of papermaking by combing hand beaten kozo fibres with personally sourced materials.

This ancient form of sheet formation fulfils today’s’ need to return to a simpler way of creativity. Learn how to hand beat the inner bark of the Paper Mulberry (Kozo) into silky fibres that create beautiful papers.  Then experiment with pigmentation and add recycled papers, textiles and other found materials.

Day 1

On the first day you will learn how to prepare the kozo fibres for sheet formation and learn how to make thin multi layered sheets using formation aid. Then you will process your found materials and experiment with their use in the papermaking process.

Day 2

Now it is time to spend all day experimenting. Some will come with pre formed ideas and others will allow their ideas develop while working with the fibers. I will be able to share my papermaking knowledge and help with any questions and procedures. It maybe for a particular project: creating thin sheets for chine collé printing or it maybe for a graphic design project.

The possibilities are endless which makes this an exciting workshop. I never know what will be created…..every workshop will be different!
